Artistic Collaboration in the Golden Age of Antwerp and Amsterdam, 1500-1700

Dr. Anne T. Woollett, curator for the Department of Paintings at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, is the guest presenter for this lecture. Collaboration among painters was a widespread and sophisticated phenomenon in the 17th-century Southern Netherlands, but also played a role in Dutch painting of the period. The origins of the practice may be traced to the late medieval workshop, where its development was shaped by the pressures of an emerging art market.

This lecture will consider the nature and various modes of collaboration in the Golden Age Netherlands, from high-level artistic cooperation between court painters to expedient products for the open market, from conceptual collaboration to alliances that served as a showcase for specialization. It also will examine the impact of a climate of collaboration painters. By analyzing the personal and artistic factors that shaped and defined collaboration in the Golden Age, it will be possible to discuss collaboration as a broader topic that continues to engage artists working today.
