Special Lighting of Mining Minds to Commemorate Class of 2013, Track Champions

The Mining Minds pick at the UTEP roundabout will be illuminated in blue and orange from Wednesday evening, May 15, through Sunday evening, May 19, to commemorate The University of Texas at El Paso’s Class of 2013.

The special lighting honors the more than 2,600 graduates who will receive their UTEP diplomas during one of three Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18.

On Wednesday, May 15, the lighting also will celebrate the UTEP men’s track and field team, which claimed the 2013 Conference USA Outdoor title on Sunday, May 12. UTEP earned the championship trophy with a final score of 166.50. Houston took second with a combined score of 152.50.

Mining Minds is an iconic piece of public art installed in 2010 to enhance The University of Texas at El Paso campus. At night, orange lights illuminate the steel structure while light from LEDs emanate from the perforated "ones" and "zeroes" at each end of the pick.

On special occasions, including historic dates, major annual milestones and to celebrate special accomplishments, the pick is illuminated in blue and orange. Learn more about the statue and its artist at miningminds.utep.edu.
