Just in time for the holidays, The University of Texas at El Paso is offering more than $3 million in scholarships to 230 students as part of its UTEP Scholars Excellence Program.
Through Dec. 9, representatives from UTEP’s Office of Scholarships will visit 27 El Paso area high schools to surprise future Miners with the news that they have received a merit scholarship to attend UTEP starting in fall 2012. These scholarships are four-year commitments that range from $6,000 to $24,000 for a total commitment to the freshman class of 2012 of more than $3 million.
“The students presented with UTEP scholarships are always surprised and very excited about their award,” said Liz Justice, director of UTEP’s Office of Scholarships. “They receive their scholarship in front of proud parents, counselors and administrators from their high schools.”
This is the largest number of four-year merit scholarships ever awarded during the first round of presentations. Last December, more than 200 high school students received $2.8 million in scholarships. A second round of scholarships will be awarded in March.
UTEP’s Office of Scholarships received an increased number of applications this year, making it a very competitive process. Recipients are selected based on their scholastic aptitude test scores, grade point average and student ranking.
The next deadline to apply for the scholarships is March 1, 2012. To apply, go to www.utep.edu/scholarships <http://www.utep.edu/scholarships> .
