Irving, Texas – National Champion Anthony Rotich was selected as the 2012-13 Conference USA Athlete of the Year announced C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky.
“We are extremely proud of Anthony (Rotich) and his accomplishments on and off the field,” said head coach Mika Laaksonen. “You never have too many student-athletes like Anthony. It’s a tremendous honor for him to be named the 2012-13 C-USA Athlete of the Year at such an early stage of his collegiate career here at UTEP.”
Rotich earned his fourth U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) All-American first-team honor after claiming the crown at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase. The distance runner clocked in a school record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:21.19, becoming the league’s first NCAA Champion in the event.
Prior to nationals, he led the Miners to its third team title at the C-USA Championships where he collected three gold medals in the 1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase and5,000m. At the championship he shattered the meet record in the steeplechase crossing the finish line with a time of 8:39.44 earning him the C-USA Performer of the Meet award.
Rotich concluded the season as he was named the 2013 C-USA Male Track Athlete of the Year.
The Nairobi, Kenya native was also successful on the cross country course where he dominated the competition as a freshman. He received his first cross country All-American honor after recording a stellar performance at the NCAA Championships where he was the first freshman to cross the finish line with a time of 29:13.5. Rotich recorded six top three finishes, including a first-place finish at the 2012C-USA Championships, which garnered him the C-USA Freshman of Meet honor.
Earlier in the season he claimed the crown at the NCAA Pre-National meet where he crossed the finish line with a personal-best of 23:01 in the 8K. Rotich concluded his first cross country season with three C-USA Athlete of the Week honors and USTFCCCA DI Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year with a 3.86 GPA as a pre-nursing major.
Rotich will return for his second season in the Orange and Blue during the fall.
